■Encounter

"What a powerful character!"

It was my first impression when I saw 'hashiru'(means 'to run') on one of those autumn days in 2008 when the sky was so high and blue.
My eyes couldn't help but stopping at the Shodo character displayed in a local calligraphy class. With it's firm lines as well as dynamism of handwriting, a very powerful and straight message was there, I thought. I was totally fascinated. At the same time my brain started to think "there must be something that I can do with this".

Later I found out that the boy was eight years old with disabilities. When he writes, he has to have someone to support his body and to move his arm. Naturally he cannot run freely. Yet he decided to write the 'hashiru' with his positive spirit and will.

I was utterly astonished and overwhelmed by the fact that this strong character was born under such background, and felt that his significant spirit had guided me to do something important with this 'hashiru'; to let people in the world know that a disabled eight-year old boy had written such a beautiful and impressive character. This is why our activity 'hashiru.jp' started.

It was the moment when a boy guides us to some significance, and we stated to create social activity called "hashiru.jp" from this spring in Japan. We start activity to widen this T-shirt (and other items) to Japan and also the world.

■"Think Global Run Local"
Let's wear this T-shirt, and run in Japan and all over the world.
This phrase is our main concept and motto. The world is called small world and is connected in every place now. However we must live in this moment well now in each site like the running that accumulation of one step one step leads to a goal. So we decided this phrase is our main concept and motto “Think Global Run Local”.

Please let us know what you thought about this activity as well as the boy's writing by sending your e-mail at hashirudays☆gmail.com. You are more than welcome to let your friends know about this website and start supporting our activity.

thanks.

※The character means 'hashiru' which means 'to run' in Japanese. It even suggests more positive meaning than just to run.

What I Talk About When I Talk About Running / Haruki Murakami

Do you know Haruki Murakami? I introduce one Japanese book to you writing by Haruki Murakami.

He is very famous novelist in Japan, also all over the world. This book is his essay released in October 2007, and he calls it memoirs. He debut as a novelist in 1979 and began a long-distance running at the same time. Thereafter he continues "running" during a quarter of century, and it is spoken how a carrier as a novelist of his own linked with "running" in this book.
He also ponders the frustrations and revelations of age and shares his love for American literature, including Raymond Carver’s What We Talk about When We Talk about Love (1981), which inspired the title of this meditative book of life lessons, artistic revelations, and humble self-analysis.

I began a long-distance running three years ago too. My insight to running and his insight are very near, and this book was given me much empathy and thought-provoking sentence. If you are a runner, I expect that you take in something. If you like writing a novel, you may be inspired something about "writing" by this book. Even if you are not runner and not novelist, it is so too.

Introduction-1
「What is Shodo?」

2009-08-05

Introduction-1「What is Shodo?」

I am glad to introduce to you about our activity “hashiru.jp”.
This blog is our staff blog in our web-site.

This is how the “hashiru.jp” was started in this spring, 2009. We created an online shop with some merchandise including beautifully printed 'hashiru t-shirt' as well as other items to maintain some little revenue for the donation to disabled boys and girls in Japan. It is a Japanese-only website at this moment; we plan to provide English translation in the near future. I introduce Shodo to you at this time before explaining about our detail activity.

What is Shodo?:
Have you ever heard about Japanese traditional art called 'Shodo'?
The direct English translation for Shodo is "The Way of Writing". It is considered one of Japan's traditional cultural arts where an ink-dipped brush is used artistically to create Chinese kanji and Japanese kana characters.

Please take a look at this calligraphy.

The character means 'hashiru' which means 'to run' in Japanese. It even suggests more positive meaning than just to run. I thought. At the first glance of this unique brush writing, I couldn't help holding my breath by the strength and the power contained in this lettering.

Works of the Shodo calligraphy are admired for the accurate composition of their characters, of course, but also for the way the brush is handled in their creation, the shading of the ink, and the balanced placement of the characters on the paper.

The beauty of Shodo:
Unlike Western Calligraphy, which was intended to create a uniform handwriting style and suppress individuality, Shodo is intended to give words life and feeling, and styles vary greatly from person to person. All characters are written using various combinations of straight and curved lines. The characters are written in seconds, and there is no touching up or altering any part of a character after a brush stroke has been completed. We were impressed by this calligraphy and decided to create an online shop with some merchandise including beautifully printed 'hashiru t-shirt' in this spring, 2009.

I will introduce our detail activity to you next time.
Thank you very much for your time and thoughts.

Best regards,
H.Y&K.A
